چکیده
We investigate how supervision (in the form of explicit instruction) interacts with distributional learning in the acquisition of the perception of a novel vowel contrast in a second language. An experiment with non-Dutch-speaking Bulgarians reveals that listeners who receive bimodal distributional training without explicit instruction can acquire new Dutch vowel contrasts, and that listeners who receive the same training wi th explicit instruction do not acquire the new contrasts nearly as well. We conclude that explicit instruction hampers distributional learning.

Certain applications require the production of intelligible speech from articulatory data. This paper outlines a research program (Ouisper : Oral Ultrasound synthetIc SPEech souRce) to synthesize speech from ultrasound acquisition of the tongue movement and video sequences of the lips. Video data is used to search in a multistream corpus associating images of the vocal tract and lips with the a...
متن کاملInternational phonetic congresses: The shift in research practices and areas of interest over 44 years
There is no doubt that phonetics is nowadays a wellestablished research discipline with a long history of its existence. The success of the first phonetic congress held in 1932 in Amsterdam gave rise to a regular series of creative meetings of phoneticians and speech scientists from across various disciplines, presenting an opportunity for fruitful discussion. The current paper addresses the de...

Thirty-two native American-English speaking children and adults reliably reproduced a non-contrastive segmental length distinction encoded in a set of monomorphemic nonce words. However, participants were unable to explicitly identify the contrast in a same/different judgment task. The results support the view that grammatically irrelevant, lexically specific temporal patterns can be learned an...

It is our task to take a discussant role in the special session “Sound to Sense: Modelling Fine Phonetic Detail” at ICPhS 2007. The contributions by Moore and Maier [12] and Lecumberri and Cooke [11] inspire further thinking on how fine phonetic details can be successfully explored by humans or by machines. The MINERVA2 system built on the multi-trace (episodic) memory model challenges current ...
